Our Summer School features some familiar lecturers, and some new, presenting their subject with passion and humour. No homework, and question time where you and the rest of your friends can explore facets of your new knowledge

MALA is a Western Australian organisation providing opportunities to expand, and enrich knowledge in a friendly social environment. It is for those who recognise that learning is a lifelong process, desiring to keep their mind active, and looking for a partnership to achieve this.

MONDAY 6th JANUARY 2020:

9.15 a.m. OFFICIAL OPENING

Professor Lyn Beazley AO FTSE, then her talk on “FORESTS: ANCIENT PAST to FUTURE CHALLENGES”

 1.00 p.m. Emeritus Professor Robert Mead “FORENSIC TOXICOLOGIST at MURDOCH UNIVERSITY  whose Topic is: “WHEN POLICING and FORENSIC SCIENCE GET IT RIGHT”.

 

TUESDAY 7TH JANUARY:

9.30 a.m. Emeritus Professor Dr Charles Oxnard, whose topic is: “ART and SCIENCE in MEDICINE: Patient and Physician in an Evidence Based World”.

 1.00 p.m. Mrs Jenny Bevan “HONORARY RESEARCH FELLOW, UWA SCHOOL OF EARTH & ENVIRONMENT” and RESEARCH ASSOCIATE at W.A. MUSEUM: whose topic is: “ACROSS THE HIMALAYAS FROM KATHMANDU TO LHASA: GEOLOGY, SCENERY and PEOPLE”.

 WEDNESDAY 8TH JANUARY:

9.30 a.m. Professor Kingsley Dixon FLS, John Curtin Distinguished Professor and W.A. Scientist of the Year 2016: whose topic is: “BURNING OUR BUSHLAND”.

 1.00 p.m. Adjunct Professor Peter Kennedy, Notre Dame University, whose topic is: “TALES FROM BOOM TOWN    –     W.A. PREMIERS FROM BRAND TO McGOWAN”.

 

THURSDAY 9TH JANUARY:

9.30 a.m. Research Associate Professor, Kevin Vinson whose Topic is: “RADIO-ASTRONOMY and the SQUARE KILOMETRE ARRAY” &”RADIO-ASTRONOMY and the SQUARE KILOMETRE ARRAY”.

1.00 p.m.  Dr Nicola Gray, SENIOR LECTURER in PHENOMICS, DIABETES and OBESITY at the Australian National Phenome Centre, Murdoch University.  Whose Topic is: “CAN URINE REVEAL WHAT YOU REALLY EAT?”

 

FRIDAY 10TH JANUARY:

9.30 a.m. Dr Belinda Brown PhD, Senior Research Fellow, Murdoch University, whose topic is: PROTECTING THE AGEING BRAIN WITH EXERCISE.

1.00p.m.  Emeritus Professor Alan Harvey “SENIOR HONORARY RESEARCH FELLOW,  SCHOOL OF HUMAN SCIENCES AT UWA” whose topic is “MUSIC, MOVEMENT, MEMORY and the AGEING BRAIN”.

 

This is the 4th Mala/Peel “Summer school”, and each year our support base grows. We would love to see YOU participate.

Light luncheons are available daily, and it’s a big chance to catch up with friends old and new.
