Solo Exhibition — Gayle Bukey

Gayle Bukey is a visual artist based in the Peel Region. Primarily self-taught, her practice is grounded in assemblage and the transformation of discarded materials. Working across contemporary media, she reimagines rejected and thrown-out materials to explore the environment and the relationship between society and the natural world.

The exhibition is entirely created from recycled materials found on roadsides, in tips and various abandoned places Bukey regularly visits.

Influenced by her time living in Turkey, Bukey incorporates abstract rock carvings, 3D sculptures, screenprints and vibrant oil paintings, creating a dialogue between material, place and lived experience. She held her first solo exhibition in 2012 and has exhibited widely in Turkey and Western Australia.

Near and Far explores the differences between two cultures that collide and ultimately entwine — both separate, individual and unique in their histories, landscapes and traditions.

The exhibition reflects Bukey’s experiences and great love of both Western Australia and Turkey, bringing these two worlds together through materials, place, history and lived experience.
