My Walkabout - Recovering through Art by Robin Thorne

I am a Wilmen/Ballardong man of the Nyoongar Nation in Southwestern Western Australia. Born on an Aboriginal Reserve before the 1967 Referendum, I later grew up on a 9,600-acre farm, working alongside my father. My role as a Peacemaker across Western Australia has helped many Nyoongar families resolve conflict and build harmony within their communities.

A Winston Churchill Memorial Trust grant enabled me to study Native American Peacemaking practices in the USA, Canada, and Hawaii, expanding my perspective and deepening my approach to conflict resolution. In 2013, I endured life-altering brain injuries, but through the unwavering love and encouragement of my wife, Allison, I found solace in painting—a vital part of my healing journey.

My artwork embodies resilience, transformation, and reintegration into life, each piece serving as a testament to recovery and self-expression.
