Second Chance
Alcoa Mandurah Art GalleryAn exhibition by the Ability Arts artists, a group of Mandurah artists living with disabilities.
‘Every day is a second chance’
Our 2023 exhibition is completely formed from upcycled furniture, objects and canvases.
We live in a throwaway culture where throwing out and replacing items has become the first choice over repairing and repurposing.
We trawled the local verge collections and found chairs, tables, mirrors, a sofa, lampshades and artworks and decided to give these found and discarded items a second chance at life, by painting, drawing, yarnbombing, decorating and embellishing them.
Our feature artwork is a sofa. We painted and appliqued it inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night, repurposing this well know image to create a sofa which may be more fun to look at than to sit on!
We all deserve a second chance and sometimes, like these discarded items, we can re-invent ourselves and embrace new opportunities.
